On Wednesday, February 19th, SBCC joined several other disability support organizations and staff from Cincinnati Children’s at the first Accessibility Training for the Cincinnati Museum Center. Presentation topics included attitudes of inclusion, disability etiquette, accessibility of built environment, communication and person-first language, accessible display design, and more.
Gwen Elliot, Director of Community Collaborations at the Museum Center, was instrumental in planning the training, and was more than pleased with this initial event. “The almost 40 museum staff leaders in the room were challenged, fascinated, and educated. They left with their heads, hearts, and notebooks filled, excited to begin making more accessible and inclusive updates to museum programs, front line staff training, wayfinding, exhibit design, communication, and more.” The Museum Center will continue to offer these trainings to include more staff members. “I’m excited to see where this leads as we continue to live out our commitment that museums are for all people.”
