Students with spina bifida can face unique challenges in the classroom. Physical, cognitive, and behavioral issues can make it difficult to learn and be fully included in the curriculum. Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s) are documents developed for each public school child who needs special education and/or accommodations to succeed in school. In this webinar, we will review the IEP process and your rights as a parent, outline typical difficulties in the classroom for students with spina bifida, and provide concrete examples of successful IEP goals.

Terri Doerr, Parent Mentor at Lakota Schools, is the experienced parent of a child with a disability. She provides one-to-one support attending IEP meetings with parents, training them on their legal rights, acting as a liaison between parents and school district personnel, and connecting parents to other parents familiar with specific disabilities. Pam has first-hand knowledge of successful IEP planning as parent of the precocious, yet complex, 15-year old, Amelia the Great. Pam has particular insight into the process since she taught high school English in her prior career.
